    cardiParty 2018-09 Zine-a-thon

Registration is closed for this event
For September, newCardigan is changing things up a little- we are taking the opportunity to get into some Zines!

What is a zine, you may ask? A zine (/ziːn/ ZEEN; short for magazine or fanzine) is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier (courtesy of Wikipedia).

Although you probably already know this, as zine’s are growing rapidly in popularity, with many libraries adding workshops into their programs, or librarians just making them for fun.

On Saturday the 15th of September, join us at The Park Hotel in Abbotsford for the chance to have a look at a selection of zines from Sticky Institute and a variety of library and personal collections, to showcase the diversity of zine culture and prove that you do not have to be an experienced crafter to make your own zine. In fact, newbies are 100% welcome and encouraged! We hope that all this chat will make you feel inspired, as there will be a voluntary zine making activity to go along with pub lunch and knowledge exchange.

Some material will be provided, but if this is something you have been keen on trying out, or already make zines, bringing materials such as pens, coloured pencils or old magazines/books along is very much encouraged. Get inspired! If you make zines, please do bring an example of your work for a little bit of ol’ school ‘show and tell’. We want to see what you do!

GLAM Blog Club – July 2018

Cool beans, we are all half way through the year (my, my doesn’t time fly) and it’s time for another GLAM Blog Club Wrap up. There was a deeply resplendent collection of thoughts from the GLAM sector on the topic of ‘Create’, so let’s give them all a moment on stage to show themselves off in the best light possible (using correct handling and conservation procedures, naturally).

Glamorous Windmill-tilter highlights the importance of having creative projects and making mistakes to assist with critical thinking and issue resolution. Hugh Rundle takes this line of thinking further and discusses Library technologies and practices that have had important learning outcomes, although being imperfect. Nik McGrath talks about her creative pursuits outside of the GLAM space being part of her self-care to allow her more energy to focus on work. However, if you do not consider yourself to be a creative type, take a few tips from the Happier Librarian about ways to still harness that sense of fun and think outside the box.

Edward Shaddow shares a plethora of exciting Youtube videos, whilst discuss the creation of new library spaces and resource for content creation. Alissa discusses Zines, how cool they are and the different tools you can use to cataloguing standard you can use to address them. Annelie discusses creating an opportunity for healing in the museum sector thorough the repatriation of Ancestral remains.

Funding is not usually a topic that gets discussed in the creative fields, but money is certainly needed to grease the wheels. Melly talk about raising funds, current online platforms for financial exchanges and why it’s hard for us all to get involved. Looking to the future, Andrew discusses creating career opportunities, for those of you in the library world.

Speaking of the future (and the future is now), our theme for July is Digital. We look forward to reading your blogs!

Please don’t forget to use the tag GLAM Blog Club in your post, and #GLAMBlogClub for any social media posts linking to it. If you haven’t done so yet, remember to register your blog at Aus GLAM Blogs. Happy blogging!

  • GLAM Blog Club – October 2017

GLAM Blog Club – October 2017

The month of September saw a baker’s dozen of GLAMBlogClub Posts on the topic of “Safe”.

Some truly thought provoking writing was generated on many different permutations of the term. There were some musing on libraries being the original safe space for the writer and that disappearing into books and archive can offer a personal reprieve from current the trials and tribulation of life for the queer librarian. Some went further to discuss the sector’s need to facilitate safe forums for discussion, especially online.

There were also posts on our safe work practices in regards to long term preservation when dealing with digital assets, as well as the need to have role models in the handling and safe keeping of physical collection materials.

Then there is our own professional safety- such as safe and supported ways we can seek professional development, about being open and inclusive to our fellow professionals and about taking some risks in your career.

The idea of a professional (or personal) comfort zone, was a particularly hot topic. The need to step outside your personal comfort zone to find happiness, meaning and adventure, the trade off between comfort and security vs leading the charge via risk and the importance to take time to understand the diverse communities that we serve.

These discussions feed naturally into the possible dangers of neutrality, that the GLAM sector has the real opportunity to be agents of change through transformative dialogue and that is there is a choice between being safe and being neutral, that safe should not be sacrificed.

The October theme is “How I Ended Up Here”- all of us here at nC HQ are looking forward to each and every one of those GLAM origin stories out there**.

When posting those past hits, please don’t forget to use the #glamblogclub hashtag when posting on Facebook and Twitter, as well as tag ‘glam blog club’ before pressing publish on your blog post.

    Get blogging!

**Origin stories can be tricky, canon can sometimes wreak havoc with a good narrative. We will certainly be part of the fandom, without being sticklers
