cardiParty 2019-07 Melbourne – Temporal Earth

Registration is closed for this event
Join Matt Coller to hear all about his fascinating digital humanities project Temporal Earth.

Temporal Earth is an interactive map of Australian history. What did the Australian railway network look like in 1865? Where exactly did D’Entrecasteaux visit? How did the Victorian Gold Rush move over time? All these quesions can now be seen and understood through Matt Coller’s Temporal Earth project. Matt will tell us about how he built it, why, and what’s next.

Time-machine.Earth combines a virtual globe with a multi-scale timeline to enable interactive exploration of cultural data throughout space and time. This live demonstration will take a brief tour of Australian history via animated data-layers: convict arrivals, European exploration and pastoral expansion, gold-rush sites, railways, telegraph lines, colonial Federation. The 65,000-year timescale reveals Australia’s archaeological record in the context of ancient geography.

With further development, Time-machine.Earth will equip researchers and collection institutions to place their datasets into a broader historical context, for delivery as animations, rich online explorations, or touchscreen installations integrated with collection objects on display.
